Doha: The State of Qatar, represented in Qatar Fund for Development (QFD), has extended urgent donations valued at $500,000 to the victims of Hurricane Matthew that struck Haiti last week, leaving hundreds dead and tens of thousands displaced.
According to a statement issued by the QFD, Qatar donations were a quick response to the appeals launched by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) to extend relief to the affected people and increase the capacity of local authorities to respond to the disaster.
The statement said the Qatari assistance aims to ensure that tens of thousands of affected families in Haiti receive necessary support and aid, and to focus efforts on reducing the devastating effects of Hurricane Matthew on relief sector, health care, and water as well as the provision of shelter to those affected.
Announcing the donations, the QFD stressed its commitment to stand beside the affected people in Haiti and provide the necessary help to them in dealing with the effects of the hurricane. It also announced its readiness to cooperate with all partners around the world to form a plan for disaster relief and assistance provision.
The Qatar Fund for Development will also contribute to the reconstruction of the affected areas in Haiti in the next phase. Qatar Fund for Development, a public development institution, is officially tasked with coordination and implementation of foreign development aid projects on behalf of the State of Qatar.
